"Last night I was transported back to the first time that I heard Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 17, “Little Russian"... All these memories flooded back as I listened to the State College Summer Orchestra perform under the strong controlling baton of the conductor Matthew Sheppard."

~Jon Vickers-Jones, reviewing June 8th, 2012 State College Summer Orchestra concert
"What a wonderful concert [his] summer orchestra gave last Friday...gestures were clear and appropriate to the mood of the music. [Sheppard] had really studied the score and was prepared for everything...showed passion and sensitivity."

~Betsy Allen, regarding the June 8th, 2012 State College Summer Orchestra concert

The SCSO is made up of community professionals and students, as well as Penn State faculty and students. Founded in 2010, this all-volunteer organization relies entirely on community support to fund music and equipment rentals. Offering free concerts each summer, the SCSO serves the dual purpose of providing an opportunity for local musicians to perform in an orchestral setting over the summer and providing a musical experience to State College residents over the summer, when many other orchestras have finished their seasons. Donations to the SCSO are accepted to defray the costs of performance rights, rental equipment, and advertising. All donations received beyond these expenses are donated to a designated charity for that concert.

For more information about the SCSO, including upcoming programs or membership, please contact Music Director Matthew Sheppard (mgs5055@gmail.com or 724.554.0181).
